TL:DR We need to put more resources, support, and perhaps a restructuring of the fellowships into Virtual Programs if we are to reach CEA’s organizing goals of expanding community diversity (geographically in particular) and increasing virtual programs introductory participant to high-impact EAer rate. I have some thoughts on how we can do this!

Setting the Stage - A Brief Overview of Virtual Programs (VP) and Myself

The Problem: My Experience with VP:

What We Can Do About It?

Final Takeaways

Big shout out to Anjay Friedman for helping me with this post and all the Virtual Program organizers for their organizing.

Hi, I help organise EA community building efforts in India. Thanks for writing this!  Completely agreed with your points, VP can be a very effective place to welcome diverse groups of participants. There's a project to generate content bringing non-western perspectives to EA that some of us are working on this year. If anyone is interested in collaborating on such a project, please email me here: anubhuti@effectivealtruism.in

Thanks for this! I hadn't thought about EA VP much but if it's true that it is the main way for potential EAs that aren't near existing groups to get into an EA learning pipeline (which seems reasonable), it seems likely that EA VP could be pretty important and relatively neglected.

I also am fascinated by the people first approach you're talking about. That's definitely the direction I have found myself leaning more towards, and I'm hoping UChicago EA will adopt similar approaches for the next year (e.g., having more 1:1s, focusing on social community).

Thanks, Miranda! Happy to share more as this project develops. I'd love to hear what you are doing at UChicago as well.

Yeah I got into EA via the virtual program intro fellowship, and while I thoroughly enjoyed it as I had an amazing facilitator and group (shoutout to Luca Stocco), what really got me set on being an EA was going to EAGx Oxford. Nothing beats in person interaction it seems…

Thanks for writing this and sharing your reflections! One additional demographic that EA VP might be  able to do more to reach are older, mid-career or late-career professionals.

You are super right and my hunch is that bringing in older professionals is extremely valuable from an impact perspective.
