Interesting! One idea they could expand on is that spreading to other stars would mean that the probe we send could later come back to kill us all. Basically, "humans" or probes on other stars would evolve differently from us, and it would take crazy long periods of time to communicate with them. It would be near impossible to coordinate an interstellar civilization, even with light-speed travel.

Thanks for the links, Rodeo. I appreciate your effort to answer my questions. :)

I can add the number of concerned AI researchers in an answer explanation - thanks for that!

I have a limited amount of questions I can fit into the quiz, so I would have to sacrifice other questions to include the one on HLMI vs. transformative AI. Also, it seems that Holden's transformative AI timeline is the same as the 2022 expert survey on HLMI (2060). So I think one timeline question should do the trick.

I'm considering just writing "Artificial General Intelligence," which is similar to HLMI, because it's the most easily recognizable term for a large audience.

Hey Rodeo, glad you enjoyed the three quizzes!

Thank you for your feedback. I'll pass it to Guided Track, where I host the program. For now, there's a completion bar at the top, but it's a bit thin and doesn't have numbers.

I saw that you work in AI Safety, so maybe you can help me clear two doubts:

  • Do AI expert surveys still predict a 50% chance of transformative AI by 2060? (a "transformative AI" would automate all activities needed to speed up scientific and technological progress).
  • Is it right to phrase the question above as "transformative AI"? Or should I call it AGI and give it a different definition? I took the "transformative AI" and the 2060 timeline from Holden Karnofsky.

Thanks for the catch on the malaria bed net :)

I think cancer deaths have been going up, not down (https://ourworldindata.org/cancer#is-the-world-making-progress-against-cancer), so maybe you meant 4M not 40M in 2015.

I don't fully understand the problem with the 'payload' point, but since I'm in doubt, and I understand that it could be a risk, I will remove it for the moment.

Some titles might change soon in case you can't find them anymore (e.g., How to Reduce Animal Cruelty in Your Diet --> How to Have a More Ethical Diet Towards Animals, and How to Help Save a Child's Life with a Malaria Bed Net Donation --> How to Help Save a Child's Life from Malaria).

Three more are in the approval process (you have to wait a few days before seeing them): How to Fight Climate Climate Change by Donating to the Best Charities, How to Donate to the Most Effective Animal Welfare Charities, and How to Help the World's Poorest People by Sending Money. I will publish some more articles in the following weeks.

Let me know if you have feedback on the articles, and I'll be glad to improve them :)

Also, thank you for writing this shortform, as it inspired my mentor Cillian Crosson to ask me about writing these wikiHows :)

I didn't know fish had 10M neurons. Thanks!

I appreciate your quantitative thinking. But I believe it's unfair to say that a fish is 10,000X worth less than a human because a fish has fewer neurons. What if suffering has a minimum threshold of neurons and then declining marginal suffering after that?  We don't know (as you point out in your last paragraph).

Comment by AndreFerretti (andreferretti) on Direct effects of marine plastic pollution on some wild animals seem small · 2022-04-20T13:00:15.883Z · EA · GW

Thanks for the post. I learnt about the size of the plastic pollution problem for animals.

I can't entirely agree with the framing of the article. 1M seabirds dying per year from plastic is not "small". It makes me think that this is not a big problem, and I shouldn't worry at all about it.

I would frame it as "1M seabirds die every year from plastic pollution, so it's a big problem (malaria kills 0.5M people per year), but it's still 1 million times less than 1T fish slaughtered per year."

-check the Nonlinear Library podcasts
-Intuition Flooding: read a bunch of examples to grasp a concept
-Spot the Core: summarise to learn, as in this comment :)
-Active recall doubles retention rate

Comment by AndreFerretti (andreferretti) on CE Is Launching a Pilot Training Program for Grantmaking Foundations · 2022-04-11T10:05:57.136Z · EA · GW

EA has too few grantmaking organizations, and there's a big gap in small-scale funding. The program's impact can be tremendous.

P.S. The five available positions you list at the end of the post are expired. I would remove them.

All charity founders should read How to Launch A High-Impact Nonprofit

I added it to my recommended books webpage.

What I learned from the book:

Potential Improvements

The post's title, "New EA book: "How to Launch a High-Impact Nonprofit" by Charity Entrepreneurship is now available worldwide in paper and eBook format", is too long.
I would cut it to "New Book: How to Launch a High-Impact Nonprofit" or "Announcing How to Launch a High-Impact Nonprofit ."

Also, some paragraphs of the book were too long. You could improve readability with ∼10% fewer pages (from 420 to 380) and convey the same—if not stronger—message.

Declining Marginal Impact of Donations

"For anyone deploying capital, nothing recedes like success.
Back in 1951, when I was attending Ben Graham's class at Columbia, an idea giving me a $10,000 gain improved my investment performance for the year by 100%. Today, an idea producing $500 million adds 1% to our performance.
It's no wonder that my annual results in the 1950s were better by nearly 30% than my annual gains in any subsequent decade."
—Warren Buffett, 1997 Letter to Shareholders

I think you would agree with Buffett on small-scale being more neglected and higher return :)

My updates from your post:

  • Global poverty has a nasty death valley for small nonprofits
  • Mental health is even more underfunded than my prior belief
  • EA needs more small and medium-scale grantmaking orgs, so CE's new training program for grantmakers can have a tremendous impact.

Feedback

Why do you consider 1-3  funders as "limited" funding in mental health but "very strong" in long-termist EA community building? It might be worth clarifying.

Does biorisk include nuclear risk? If so, I would mention it. If not, I would add nuclear as a cause area.

Updates for the table's" data:
-the largest funder is quitting nuclear safety
-FTX Future Fund is a new megadonor in AI, biorisk, nuclear, policy, and EA community building.

I love "Doing good is messy"—I will add it to my Anki quotes.
